PRIVATIZING CORRECTIONS
IMMIGRANT PRISONS
100% of the prisons used to imprison immigrants in the USA are for-profit, private prisons.
In the first three months of Trump's presidency, over 100,000 immigrants were locked up in 180 different private facilities.
Since 2003, about 200 detained immigrants have died in private prisons.
PRIVATE JUVENILE PRISONS
Private prisons hold juveniles guilty of only "technical violations" (which might involve not showing up in court for a traffic violation) for 87% longer than public prisons.
Private prisons hold juveniles in prison for 80% longer for "status offenses" (an action that would not be a crime if the act were committed by an adult, such as skipping school or drinking a beer).
AMERICAN MASS INCARCERATION
The U.S. incarcerates more of its population than any nation in the world
Two-thirds of persons detained in jails report annual incomes under $12,000
Cost to lock up an adult=$34,000; cost to educate a student=$12,330
The average juvenile held in confinement is at least 4 years behind in school
